Cris grew up at Oak Lodge, Seneca, Illinois along the Illinois River. He was the son of the late Ted and Loreto (Shelton) Swanson.

Swanson was asked to design, develop and implement for Kishwaukee College, Malta, Illinois a Computer Science Program and Department. He taught computers on the college level before returning to the business world. He has fond memories of working for Caron International in Rochelle, Illinois and Robesonia, PA. His career was with computers, forecasting, and finance.
