Mary Sattazahn Obituary

Captain Mary D. Sattazahn, U.S. Navy (Ret.), age 83, of Mineral, VA passed away on Sunday, October 29, 2023 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Lebanon.

Born in Marion Twp. on June 7, 1940, the daughter of the late Ray M. and Elsie M. (Dubbs) Sattazahn.

She was a 1958 graduate of Conrad Weiser High School. She began her career as a nursing assistant at the Reading Hospital, then served as an LPN at Good Samaritan Hospital in Lebanon. She graduated from the Frankford Hospital School of Nursing in Philadelphia, and later earned her master’s degree in Nursing from the University of Maryland.

Commissioned in 1968, Captain Sattazahn proudly served 24 years in the U.S. Navy, having been stationed many places throughout the country and the world. She was awarded the Vietnam Service Medal with Bronze Star, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, two National Defense Medals, the Defense & Navy Meritorious Service Medals, the Navy Commendation Medal, and the Navy Achievement Medal. Following her military career she owned & operated Alpha Arabian’s Equine facility in Virginia.

She was a member of Louisa Methodist Church in Louisa, VA; a life member of the Marion Twp. Grange; and a 50 plus year member of the Pennsylvania State Grange, where she was the recipient of the “Quilt of Honor”. She was past president of the Anna Coves HOA, and was active with the Louisa County Supervisors.

She is survived by her brothers, Robert L. Sattazahn widower of Jane, Clarence C. Sattazahn husband of Marlene, and Dennis G. Sattazahn husband of Betsy; her long-time friend, Col. Nurse Corps, US Army (Ret.) Susan Houser; and many nieces & nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Ray R. Sattazahn.

A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, November 18, 2023 at 11:00am at St. Paul’s of Hamlin U.C.C., 2351-2355 Mt. Zion Rd., Fredericksburg, PA 17026.

A private burial with military honors will take place at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery.
